Three vacation homes in Ocean Beach were gutted by flames on March 7.

Ian Levine, information officer for the Ocean Beach Fire Department, said two houses on Bungalow Walk were completely destroyed and one home on Ocean Road has serious damage as well.

The homes were vacant for the season. No one was reported hurt.

More than 150 firefighters, EMT’s and police officers were at the scene of this early morning blaze which started at about 1 a.m. and was under control at around 5 a.m.

The homes on Bungalow Walk were owned by the Smith family of New York and the Mosconi family of New Jersey. Owner Patrick Smith is an Ocean Beach firefighter. For more than 50 years the Silsdorf family occupied the home on Ocean Road.

First Assistant Fire Chief Dan McKenna said strong winds spread the flames.

“It could have been much worse, because of the winds,” acknowledged Levine. “We were also lucky not a lot of people were around.”

Arson and Long Island Power Authority\National Grid investigators are examining the fire and have not filed their report as of this publication date.

The fire is believed to have started at one of the Bungalow Walk homes.

Due to it being a weekend, many fire fighters were on hand. Fire Departments from Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, Point O’ Woods, Fair Harbor, Saltaire, Kismet as well as the Long Island towns of Bay Shore and West Islip responded. Emergency Medical Services responders from Ocean Beach, as well as Bay Shore and Brightwaters were on hand. Police assistance was provided by Ocean Beach, as well as the Suffolk County Marine Bureau.
