Dear Editor:
As a former business owner in town (Sprinkles) and a 43 year veteran of the island. I would like to offer some suggestions to make the town of Ocean Beach a better place to visit and enjoy.
The problem for me and many of my friends is that when we walk into town we are assaulted by the noise. When Joe Loeffler was chief of police, we had real enforcement of noise. He walked around with a decibel counting device, and he kept the doors on all the places closed. That would be nice , but ... if all the bars were to have a double door, then we simply would not hear the music and crowds. This is simple and easy to do and is the practice in most places throughout the US , it is also considerate .
What is also considerate is that club owners stop the practice of advertising on Long Island for promotions that bring people over here for the sole purpose of getting drunk. The Sandbar is the worst of the clubs in this regard. Last week was Summer St Paddy's day, for goodness sakes folks, have some respect for our town. There are enough people here every weekend for you to make money, we don't need the dregs of the earth coming over here just because they can swill beer for cheap prices. This year i have seen more people throwing up than ever.
What would also be nice is if the Police were to visit the beach without someone calling them. Just cruise around 1pm every afternoon and check on the folks with cups, food ,etc..That would also apply in town concerning cups, men with no shirts and all the rules people think are crazy but make life bearable with all the crowds.
So Mr. Mayor and all the Board, we know you are here to make a living,we respect that, but homeowners and renters are here too, a couple of little changes like this could make us all compatible. Believe it or not , we would come to town more often and come to your establishments more often too!!
