Fair Harbor (10)Fair Harbor Town Talk

Fair Harbor
The mostly beautiful July weather has been a tremendous boon for the hub of the Lonelyville, Dunewood and Fair Harbor tri-community. The Dock, a.k.a. downtown in Fair Harbor, is back to its very busy self.
Patrick Adams’ inventive menu, Unfriendly’s plethora of sticky confections, daring displays of stunt-flying turns and beautifully synchronized skimming birds, and, of course, awe inspiring sunsets drive a diverse parade of vacationers to this “Sixish” hotspot. While the adult crowd sips, chats and mingles, our clever kids have added a new pick-up game to the mix: “Faculty,” a trust no one type of “Shark and Minnow” match; and, the nightly assembly of a make-shift bike ramp (that makes parents squirm in fear of concussions or worse) rank among the favorite leisure activities this month. Thursday night is Bingo night in Fair Harbor. Look for an overflowing, excited crowd spilling out of the fire house and onto the sidewalk with lots of “Shhhs” and “What was that?” Cathy Zweibel of Holly Walk was the first lucky winner of the season, although Max Sniderman took home a whopping $175 bucks! Lonelyville’s beach continues to be the surfing Mecca of the West End. The lure was so great; Maguire’s owners Drew Becker and Jim Betz were compelled to make the trip over on their only day off to check it out. When the surf’s out, throngs of skim boarders happily make the best of low tide. Lonelyville and Dunewood beach parties all benefitted from the generosity of our favorite “Sanitary Engineer,” John Altieri, who proudly celebrates 50 years in business this summer. Dunewood party organizers went the extra mile by booking the super talented Melissa Adams and Dave Mendelssohn to belt out classics to very welcoming and appreciative families. The fabulously stylish and sweet natured Suzanne Tick celebrated her 50th birthday with lots of great food and good cheer. When Suzanne’s party wrapped, a crew of primed night crawlers set out yet again to celebrate, “Solid Gold” style, the 40th birthday of Fair Harbor’s own spin queen, Melanie Griffith. Lisa and Billy Cassara once again out did themselves with a very rocking Fourth of July dance party. The kids didn’t even notice their time at the party had expired thanks to the amazingly generous and beautiful display of “Fifth Avenue Fire Works” that seemed to go on longer than any light show ever remembered by this truly thankful audience. Speaking of dance parties, the “Fresh Prince of Saltaire,” Tyler Ehrman, commanded a sweaty, packed mass of raving dancers at LeDock’s infamous, annual White Party. Black lights dazzlingly illuminated a gyrating sea of white garbed revelers. Smash and Jason certainly worked off just as many calories as the dancers while serving up a demandingly thirsty crowd. Thanks to Le Dock’s entire crew for a job well done. Look forward to the “Theme TK” LeDock Party on Aug. 22. The Pine Walk Fair appeared to be another huge success. Throngs of shoppers and onlookers came down to find beautiful things to buy. It was great to see some old-time Fair Harbor faces, Samantha Sejas and Kenny Goodman. Paul Westlake also made a rare appearance. While there are tons of good things going on, all is not idyllic in our peaceful tri-community. A nasty rash of house break-ins, random acts of vandalism in the form of dozens and dozens of slashed bike tires and, sleazy displays of drunk and disorderly types have left many folks yearning for days of unquestioned safety and civility in our communities. Keep your eyes open and lock your doors folks! At press time, our local DuneGood hero, Dr. Peter Taub, is volunteering on his third surgical mission with KomedyPlast in Peru to treat pediatric patients afflicted with congenital anomalies, such as cleft and palate, and complex deformities of the skull, known as craniosynostosis. Talk about generous: Peter pays his own airfare, conducts the surgeries free of charge, uses his vacation time away from his family and takes a financial loss from time away from his professional practice. While the KomedyPlast team travels on their own dime and time, medical equipment and supplies must be financed. The costs associated with these types of severely complex surgeries can range in the tens of thousands of dollars. Maxine Hayden has organized a KomedyPlast Walk-a-thon and fundraiser on Aug.15, at 8 a.m. along the ocean from Sandpiper Walk in Dunewood to Ocean Beach. It will end with a generous donation of beverages and refreshments from Scott Hirsch at the Island Mermaid. “I like knowing every dime will make a difference and go directly to putting smiles back on these children’s faces,” Hayden said. To support the cause, meet up at The Island Mermaid around 9 a.m. or send checks made payable to KomedyPlast, along with a note c/o Maxine Hayden, general delivery, Fair Harbor, N.Y., 11706. The rain has been dreadful, but is hasn’t dampened our tri-community spirit! There are lots of good things cooking in Lonelyville, Dunewood, and Fair Harbor.
Ole Lonelyville is hosting their annual Potluck Picnic on Saturday, June 28, at the top of Plank Walk at 5:30 p.m. All neighboring community members are welcome to celebrate this season’s kick-off by sharing some delicious summer fare and fun beach games with the kids. Organizers also hope to offset the cost of fixing and replacing the walks, a financial burden shouldered by Lonelyville’s 20 or so homeowners—and not the town of Islip. Last year’s repairs were something to the tune of $10,000. Yikes! Picnic goers can support the ongoing and much needed boardwalk repairs by buying t-shirts and raffle tickets with a chance to win “dinner for two” at LeDock. Speaking of which, our favorite local eatery’s newest menu addition includes plump and juicy little Jaxson Donald Adams. Talk about a cute set of dimples! Have you met barman Michael O’Donnell? He’s another stunner to an already gorgeous crew. If you miss them at the restaurant, you can be sure to find them all surfing off the Lonelyville beach this summer. Little Jax joins a newborn parade of third generation, grandbaby Fire Islanders: Genevieve Schiller, Emily (Finkelstein) Kommittee, Repin Minoff, Eden Schoenfield, and Celia (Goodman) Brassman to name a few. At press time, Cora Reynolds is still an only child, but dad did leak the names of eminent arrivals, Emmett and Kaitlin, any day now. Hang in there Kim! How time flies here on Fire Island. Christina Bologna’s bouncing little bambino is all grown up. The family celebrated Julliano’s 21st birthday in early June. Remember the island-wide firefighter competitions in downtown Fair Harbor years ago? It would be great to see the much appreciated new blood at the Fair Harbor Fire Department debut in some fun and safe action this year! But the excitement and glory of the games are not why Lonelyville’s Mike Bruno, Dunewood’s John DePasquale, and Fair Harbor’s John Tsaousis signed on. These thoughtful, generous guys give up loads of time with their families and friends to take extensive classes, hands-on training courses and complete the testing required to become certified firefighters. Alex Lyudmer and Joey Abrams volunteered last year and they can attest to the huge amount of time and energy such a commitment entails. The community owes a tremendous debt to all the volunteers at the Fair Harbor Fire Department who do such a great job of keeping us safe while we laze about enjoying ourselves. Look out for their latest newsletter and be sure to show your gratitude in the form of an equally generous donation. While progress is being made on new plans for the Fair Harbor playground and fire house, our children are making the utmost with what stands today. The time-honored “Wall Ball” is no longer in vogue, much to the relief of the department who grew extremely tired of replacing windows. These days you’ll find a slew of kids ranging in height and ages from five to 15 lined up on the east wall of the building. The shrieking you’re likely to hear is not coming from the doctor’s office, but from the excitement and thrill of a cut-throat game of four square. When not playing pick-up games of four square, Manhunt, Russian bulldog or jackpot down in Fair Harbor, you’re likely to find a regatta of young participants in the great sailing program Dunewood shares with kids from all neighboring communities. Check out their Web site www.dunewoodfi.com for information and registration. We are saddened to report the passing of Fair Harbor family member, Ruth Estler, after a year-long battle with cancer. Ruth represented the last of the Estlers, who had been in Fair Harbor since 1923. She was a working stage and television actress, but Ruth’s greatest role was that of a humanitarian. She worked in Germany for Colon Powell during the Cold War and for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and as an advocate for females in the service. According to her cousin, Susie Chadburn, Ruth’s favorite place on earth was Fair Harbor, where she will reside in the hearts of residents forever more. Esme Forbes, truly another great actress in making, showed all of Fire Island her brilliance in her duet “It’s All About Me,” with classmate Samantha Cummings, in the outstanding graduation program of Fire Island’s Woodhull School. It has been delightful to witnesses the transformation of this once extremely shy young lass into a stunningly beautiful, confident and talented young lady. I hope to see Esme, and all the other budding talent from Lonelyville, Dunewood and Fair Harbor participate in the “Fire Island’s Got Talent” competition at the Ocean Beach Community House this year. Let’s show them what we’ve got!

It's the 36th annual Pine Walk Fair, scheduled for Saturday, July 5, (rain date Sunday, July 6) and it will take place all over our "downtown area" from Pine Walk and the Bay to all the way down the dock. (Yes, there will be town gossip at the end of this column, but first things first, so please don't skip the fair description!) This event is our large annual fundraiser and it enables us to keep a decent size slush fund for both normal and emergency purposes; the Silent Auction component of the fair raises most of the money for community needs. The Pine Walk Fair also gives an annual donation to the Fresh Air Fund.

Memorial Day Reflections:
We look forward to Memorial Day Weekend when what we hope will be a fun filled summer on Fire Island officially begins. However, there is some sadness we must cope with. We have lost some real old-time Fair Harborites this year. We will miss seeing Jim Walsh who was always working around the village fixing things at the fire house or there about. He kept a very old projector going so Claire, his dedicated wife, could continue the weekly movies. He always had a smile and a kind word.
