Two are running a designer clothing and accessory shop in Ocean Beach, another two became co-publishers of a newspaper they founded this summer and then there's the author who finished her first book at age 12.

A Walk For Peace Resumes on Sept. 11th

Peter Brennan often wears his heart on his sleeve. Recently on the “red-eye” over to Bay Shore, Peter shared his apprehension of his son Thomas beginning school in the fall, his homesickness for Ireland, and how deeply he’ll miss departing friends and “life” come Tumbleweed Tuesday.
Michael Ruscito of West Islip was, by all accounts, a talented member of Boston College’s senior class. He was an economics major and was scheduled to graduate next May. But Ruscito, 21, lost his life during an early morning boating excursion on the Great South Bay on Aug. 16 after his 23-foot Boston Whaler collided with the Robert Moses Causeway.

He thought he was as good as dead.
Walking alone at sunset to the Fire Island Synagogue in Seaview from his Fair Harbor summer home, Dr. David Campeas, a New Jersey ophthalmologist, prepared to fast as of nightfall on Saturday, Aug. 9 to commemorate Tisha B'Av, which marks the saddest days in Jewish history. But before he could make it there, three men—one an off-duty New York City Police Department detective—accused him of flashing a pair of 9-year-old girls in Atlantique Beach, called him anti-gay slurs and beat him to the ground, he claims.Image
As the summer draws to a close, the Fire Island National Seashore continues to prepare for the off season.
ImageMore than 3,000 people danced the afternoon away for a good cause under a deep cerulean sky at the third annual Ascension Party on the beach in the Fire Island Pines on Sunday, Aug. 17.

ImageLocal contractor Sam Wood has spent his entire life on Fire Island. His parents built an A-frame house in Kismet in 1959. A hurricane forced them to evacuate two years later, and Wood recalled authorities on loud speakers who urged residents to take any valuables with them. Their house did not have a phone or a television, so his father grabbed the next best thing—a piece of fruit.
