Described by many as a "a force of nature."Jean Wood passed away this March 13 at the age of 85 after a 5-year bout with Parkinson's disease.
Jean's daughter, Wendy, attributed her energy and her deeds to her religion and devotion to God.
A beautiful memorial service was held in Kismet this May. All six of her children and several grandchildren took part.
A beautiful woman, Jean represented New York as a Mrs. America Pageant winner. An industrial designer, she designed and, with her family, built several of their homes by themselves. Her Sanibel Island, Florida home was reknown for its unique architecture and self-cooling design. She was a non-stop whirlwind who saw problems and suffering in the world and did something about them, never taking no for an answer. She was active in the civil rights and anti-war movements and was an alternate energy, recycling environmentalist before anyone gave thought to such things. She oversaw the care of her sick husband for many years. She offered a unique Sunday school at which she played a 1890s pump organ and originated the July 4 parade for the children of Kismet. She opened her home and her heart to Long Island's migrant farm workers, battered women, artists, musicians and religious workers. The anecdotes, some humorous, some poignant, poured from her children's memories and from what they found in her files.
Long time friends and neighbors spoke at the ceremony and to one another at the lunch held after the ceremony. The family was weepy. We were all weepy, but all were filled with our memories and new admiration for this incredible woman.
